Pilot evaluation

Evaluating a small pilot project with a partner in Japan

By the GLOBAL MUSIC PARTNERSHIP editorial team / Supervised by Naoto Tanaka (TARNAR)

Starting an international project at full scale means a heavy burden if it does not work out. A small pilot lets both sides test the fit and the response before expanding.

Ways to start small

  • Co-producing a single track
  • One exchange performance
  • An online workshop
  • A limited online release

Set goals before you start

Decide in advance what success means. Narrow it down to about three points, such as the quality of the work, how smoothly production went, audience response, and cost and time.

Keep records

Record the number of exchanges, time and cost spent, problems and what went well. This makes the review much easier.

Decide whether to continue

  1. Compare the goals with the actual results
  2. Hold a review meeting with your partner
  3. Decide what to change next time
  4. Choose to continue, change the format, or stop

Deciding to stop is also a valuable result. Bring what you learned to the next pilot.
